Walks

3. Coastal walk - Carraroe

Carraroe or An Cheathrú Rua is a peninsula located around 40 kilometres west of Galway city along the coast road. It has a rugged rocky landscape with beautiful coastline and stunning views. It has one of the largest Irish-speaking communities in the country and an equally a strong boating tradition, being the centre in Connemara for the centuries-old red-sailed boats or "Hookers". The walk starts from the village heading north to join the coastline and then following it closely south down the peninsula.

Highlights:
Currachs and sailing boats at Caladh Thadhg harbour, views of Maamturk mountains north, the "Ceantar na nOileán" archipelago, west and the Aran islands and the Burren south across Galway Bay; coral strand at Trá an Dóilín, former RIC barracks and flashpoint in Land War during 1880s, Connemara Ponies and artist Charles Lamb's residence.

Duration of walk:
3 hours

Grade:
Easy with uneven paths at times on coastal route

Equipment required:
Strong boots, warm jumper/fleeces and waterproof jacket. Packed lunch and water
