1. Island walk - Fínis Island

Fínis is a deserted island lying of the coast of Carna in Connemara. It is steeped in history and culture which can be glimpsed through the ruins and relics left behind. It is an opportunity to step back in time as the island comes alive through stories of past residents. The coast and other features will also be explored.

Highlights:
Panoramic view to mainland with the Twelve Bens in the background and the granite shoreline and bog in the foreground; sand dunes; old houses and roads beginning to be reclaimed by the white sand; birds and other wildlife

Duration of walk:
3 – 4 hours

Grade:
Easy. This walk involves accessing the island by foot a low tide. This requires crossing a two foot long channel where the water can be up to mid-calf so wellington boots are required or if you prefer to wade through in bare feet. The Island is relatively flat and conditions underfoot are generally dry.

Equipment required:
Waterproof boots (option to wade in bare feet if desired) or sturdy walking boots; waterproof outerwear; drinking water; packed lunch if desired;

Note:
This walk involves accessing the island by foot at low spring tide; therefore it is only accessible a certain times throughout the year. Dates will be given on request.
