2. Coastal walk – Silver Strand

The Silver Strand or Trá na gCeann as it’s known as Gaeilge, is located just within the Galway city limits. It is a coastal walk that showcases the biodiversity and coastal habitats that have developed naturally here. This walk starts at Silver Strand beach and will focus on Lough Rusheen, the importance of the area for resident and over wintering birds and the geology of the area.

Drumlins; storm beach;  Grey rock; heron colony; habitats, mud flats, sand flats, salt marshes and associated productivity; St. Enda’s Holy Well; Lynch burial chamber; Barna House; Rusheen bird watching zone

Duration of walk:
3 – 4 hours

Easy. The terrain is relatively flat but can be slippery in parts close to the shore.

Equipment required:
Waterproof outerwear including walking boots, rain jacket; food and drink

Due to tidal restrictions the walk sequence may be reversed, starting at Lough Rusheen City Park on the Barna Road. Parking and toilet facilities are normally available at Silver Strand.
